Stephanie F. "Stella" (Strong) Marcovicz, age 31
Mrs. Stephanie F. "Stella" (Strong) Marcovicz, of 24 Morris Street, Hartford, was born July 3, 1913 in Hartford, daughter of Polish-born parents Rose (Mlynek) and Matthew Strong. Stephanie and her son Francis, Jr. were found dead at the circus grounds after the fire on July 6, and were buried at Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery in Bloomfield after services at Talarski Funeral Home. Mrs. Marcovicz is survived by her husband, Francis J. "Frank" Markovicz; her mother and step-father, Rose (Mlynek) and Matthew Bocek; sisters Mrs. Nellie (Strong) Ciaglo, Mrs. Josephine (Poltorak) Orzech, 24, and Miss Dorothy Bocek, 13; step-sisters Miss Gladys Bocek, 19, and Miss Bertha Bocek, 16; brothers Michael Strong, 29, in the US Army, and Frank Poltorak, 23, in the US Navy.
Stella and her son Francis attended the circus with Stella's sister Dorothy, and neighbors Blanche and Seth Grape. Body #1517, burned beyond recognition, was identified as Stephanie Marcovicz at the State Armory by her mother, Rose Bocek, on July 7 based on a ring found on the body. Also on the body was found a watch and a wedding ring. Stella's husband Frank was said to have collapsed when he saw what was left of his wife. Mrs. Marcovicz's estate was awarded $9,000 by the arbitration board.
